October 04, 2004

Stutz Artiano shareholder, Dan Shinoff, was recently quoted in Newsweek with regard to the controversy surrounding the balance between students’ rights of freedom of speech and religion, and a school’s duty to prevent violence and keep students and staff free of harassment.

The article referenced the spring battle at Poway High School between school administration and sophomore student, Tyler Chase Harper, over freedom of speech and religion in schools. Regarding the lawsuit that ensued between Harper v. Poway Unified School District, Dan Shinoff, representing Poway Unified School District, told Newsweek that the shirt, on which Harper had written, “Homosexuality is shameful. Romans 1:27,” “Be ashamed” and “Our school embraced what God has condemned,” was disrupting the class.
